A two-day session of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPC BiH) was held from 30 September to 1 October 2020 in the new building of the Palace of Justice in Trebinje, which houses the District and Basic Court of Trebinje, as well as the District Public Prosecutor's Office.

The new building was officially opened in early September and has a modern archive, detention facilities, two large modern courtrooms, rooms for court police, lawyers, witness support, a library and the necessary technical and IT equipment.

In this way, the problem of lack of room was addressed and the full functionality of the three most important judicial institutions was ensured.

The HJPC BiH supported the construction through the preparation and drafting of project documentation, which was a necessary precondition for starting the construction process. The preparation of project documentation was ensured under the project Improving Judicial Efficiency II, which was implemented by the HJPC BiH and funded by the Government of Sweden – a long-standing partner of BiH judiciary. Funds for the construction of the Palace of Justice were allocated by the Delegation of the European Union to BiH under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) programme.

Adequate spatial capacities and working conditions in judicial institutions are necessary for the smooth functioning of the justice system, which is why the HJPC BiH, in cooperation with the international partners, has made constant efforts to ensure conditions for the reconstruction and construction of judicial institutions buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In this way, preconditions have been created for the efficient performance of judicial office holders and court staff, with the aim of providing a higher standard of services and facilitating access for citizens.

With the involvement of the HJPC BiH and the generous support of the Government of Sweden, the projects of constructing or reconstructing judicial institutions buildings have been implemented in Ljubuski, Istocno Sarajevo, Tuzla, Foca, Bihac, Banja Luka, Doboj, Zepce, Sarajevo, Mrkonjic Grad, Prnjavor and Bijeljina.

As a token of gratitude, a plaque informing about the contribution of the Government of Sweden, which supported the construction process of the new building of the Palace of Justice in Trebinje, was placed.
